Fossil Finds & Musings  |  last updated: Jan 2006

Welcome

Hi! I’m just an amateur fossil nerd. I like creek beds, cliff walks, and that moment when a boring rock suddenly has a pattern that doesn’t feel random. Most of my finds are small (shell fragments, imprints, tiny teeth), but I keep a little catalog anyway. It’s not fancy — just a place to keep notes.

NOTE TO SELF: label everything, even if it feels obvious now.

If you stumbled here by accident: welcome. If you collect too: you already know the feeling.

Specimens I’ve Found

  • Ammonite imprint — spiral shell impression, creek bank find (mudstone).
  • Crinoid stem bits — “stacked beads” look, super common but still cool.
  • Shark tooth fragment — small, dark enamel, beach gravel scoop.
  • Brachiopod shell — ridged, symmetrical, makes the best “is this real?” starter fossil.
Catalog style: locationrock typenotes • (and a photo if the camera behaves)

Sometimes I swear I’ve seen something once and then never again. Like it was there… and then it wasn’t.

Tips for New Collectors

1) learn local rock layers (sedimentary exposures = friends).
2) bring a cheap hand lens. you’ll feel silly until you don’t.
3) write down where you found it. your future self will thank you.
4) be respectful — some sites are protected; take photos instead.
